June 14, 2009 - Queens Pita PUBLIC ADVISORY - SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2009
On Friday, June 12, 2009, the Vaad Harabonim of Queens ordered the retail establishment known as Queens Pita Bakery and/or Queens Kosher Pita, located at 68-38 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11367, to terminate the employment and any ownership interest of Isaac Ebstein, who earlier in the week pled guilty to felony and misdemeanor sex crime-related charges in the State Supreme Court, Queens County.
In its hand delivered letter to Queens Pita, signed by Executive Vice-President, Rabbi Chaim Schwartz, the Vaad stated that "by the close of business on June 12, Ebstein shall neither work, nor be present in the store in any capacity whatsoever."
Additionally, the letter ordered Queens Pita "to remove Ebstein as an owner, shareholder, officer, director, and/or partner, and provide written evidence."
The Vaad was contacted by the victims family, and was closely monitoring the situation. Two senior members of the Vaad Harabonim of Queens were present in court for the guilty plea.
The Kosher Supervision Agreement between the Vaad and Queens Pita provides that the Vaad has the discretion to terminate the Agreement upon the conviction of any crime of moral terpitude committed by a store officer or director. This clause was cited by the Vaad in its letter.
The decision to order Ebstein's withdrawal as an owner and employee was jointly made by the Vaad and local Kew Gardens Hills congregational rabbis in a special meeting, and upon consultation with legal counsel.
Vaad officials have also conferred with Queens Pita owner and proprietor Norman Kohn. Queens Pita has complied with the Vaad directive to immediately terminate Ebstein's employment. The report from the NY Daily News Saturday, June 13, 2009 that Ebstein would be returning to work, based on a statement from an unidentified female employee, is erroneous.
Queens Pita continues to be under the supervision of the Vaad.

September 05, 2005 - Chodosh season is here...
It is well known that many of us rely upon the opinion of poskim who hold that the prohibition of chodosh does not apply to grain harvested outside of the Land of Israel. However, the Shulchan Orech adopts the view of the majority of Rishonim who hold that the prohibition of chodosh is an issur doraysa-even in chutz laretz and even with regard to grain harvested by Gentiles. The Mishnah Berurah concludes that we certianly have no right to admonish those who are lenient---however a scrupulous person (baal nefesh) should be machmir to the best of his ability. Many Sefardic communities have traditionally been machmir and a growing number of Ashkenazim have recently become makpid on chodosh as well. Consult with your own Rav for further guidance.

January 12, 2005 - Lettuce Checking Procedures
Romaine Lettuce must be thoroughly washed and checked for insects even when bearing certification. Please note that the small insects often found on lettuce leaves are often camouflaged by the leaf because they are green in color. Thorough checking of each leaf can be quite tedious. We therefore recommend the following alternative: The leaves may be separated and washed in a solution of vegetable wash such as Cleen Greens and then rinsed. This procedure has proven most effective in removing insects from green leafy vegetables. When washed in this manner checking each leaf is not required.
Exception: Alei Katif brand may be used without checking once it is rinsed.

September 14, 2004 - Filtering Required for NYC Drinking Water
The kosher observant public is well aware of the debate which has developed regarding the permissability of NYC tap water, ever since it was discovered to contain "copepods" -tiny, yet non-microscopic marine creatures.
In light of the recently publicized Psak Halacha from senior poskim, the Vaad has notified its' kosher certified establishments that they must install filters without delay. Henceforth, all drinking water served in VHQ establishments as well as all water used in cooking and food preparation will be filtered.

August 13, 2004 - Important Notice
Attention Kohanim
The Torah forbids kohanim from coming into contact with a grave and even from being under the same canopy as a grave-an Ohel Hames.
Kohanim should avoid traversing under trees that may extend even partially over graves if the branches are intermingled, forming one canopy.
As such, kohanim must be aware that many of the trees which line the southbound side of Main St. from Reeves Ave. (near the L.I.E.) to Melbourne Ave. (near the Mobil station) extend over the cemetery and constitute an Ohel Hames.
To avoid transgression, kohanim should not walk, travel by bus or drive on the southbound side of Main St. in this vicinity, even in the centermost lanes.
Additionally, kohanim should avoid parking under the trees that extend over the easternmost section of the Supersol parking lot.

February 19, 2004 - Bais Din Awareness
As in past years, the Vaad Harabonim of Queens has dedicated this coming Shabbos, Parshas Mishpatim, as a community wide Bais Din Awareness week. We are well aware of the serious nature of the Isur Arkaos as described in Rashi in the beginning of Mishpatim and elaborated upon in Choshen Mishpat Siman 26. Unfortunately, many otherwise Torah observant Jews are Morah Heter in this regard. With the strength of a united call of awareness may we succeed in our mission to eradicate the terrible Chilu Hashem that this Isur represents.

January 08, 2004 - Shabbos Parshas Vayechi is Chevra Kadisha Awareness week As we do each year, the Vaad Harabonim of Queens proclaims Shabbos parshas Vayechi "Chevra Kadisha Awareness Shabbos". We urge each member of the community to become familiar with the many points which are elaborated upon in the Chevra Kadisha section of this website. October 21, 2003 - Health Alert-Remedia Infant Formula
Unprecedented Food Alert on the Sabbath in Jewish Communities
New York (www.koshertoday.com) An unprecedented warning was distributed in synagogues through flyers while sound trucks circulated in several of New York's Jewish neighborhood despite the Sabbath in reaction to news that the Israel-based Remedia infant formula has been poisoned. 10 babies were hospitalized in Israel with encephalopathy in the past several months, three in the past week. All of them drank non-dairy soya-based Remedia infant formula. Four of them are in serious condition at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel in Petah Tikva. Three of the 10 babies have died. Remedia is widely sold in may Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in the US because of its "reliable" kosher certification. Dr. Dorit Nitzan-Kalusky, head of Israel's Health Ministry's Food and Nutrition Service, decided over the weekend to take this type of formula off the shelves at least until lab tests determine if there was anything in the German-made powder that could have caused the babies to suffer convulsions and go into a coma. The powder is imported by the Israeli company from Germany, which makes it without any cow's milk components for children who suffer from lactose intolerance or whose haredi parents prefer a non-dairy formula so as not to complicate meat meals. The Health Ministry said Saturday night that the German company changed the components of its formula last spring, which is when the complications began to appear.
